I had a chance to chat with Virginia tennis player Sanam Singh after yesterday’s match. The senior co-captain talked about the team’s wins over Duke and UNC, freshman star Alex Domijan’s godliness, and the Wahoos’ drive for an NCAA title.

Here are some tid-bits…
Me: Overall, was this a pretty good weekend for you guys—beating Duke and UNC?
Sanam: Duke and UNC are always two of the toughest opponents in the ACC for us. This was a huge weekend—we knew that coming in. We knew it was going to be hard because both teams compete really well. They have some quality players. We had a good win against Duke (a 6-1 triumph on Friday) and it feels good to come on out on top of UNC again (a 5-2 win on Sunday).
Me: Domijan—a lot of fans are really excited about him. Is he as good as everybody is saying? Is he the real deal?
Sanam: Yeah, it’s hard to argue with the fact that he doesn’t lose. Hopefully, he can keep it going. He’s been a huge addition for us this season. Coming in as a freshman and playing No. 2 is really hard, and he’s done an unbelievable job. He’s a great player. Hopefully, he can keep it going.
Me: What’s the best part about his game? Is it his serve?
Sanam: I just feel it’s his size and the weight of his shot—people just get intimidated when they play him. He uses that to his advantage, and he gets off to quick starts. I feel like he’s a really good frontrunner. When he gets up on people, he really stays on them and he uses his image on the court and his intimidation.
Me: So how much does an NCAA championship drive you personally? I know you guys have been close so many times. Is it something you think about a lot?
Sanam: Yeah, we’re working toward that. That’s our main goal. Me and Shazzy (Michael Shabaz), this is our last year. We’ve been close all three years. We’ve trying to work really hard off the court and stay disciplined and have been trying to lead by example. I feel all the guys have done a really good job of working hard off the court and getting in some quality practices. We’re all working toward playing our best tennis in May.
