Virginia coach Brian Boland wasn’t as bummed as you would think following his team’s loss to Ohio State in the ITA Indoor semifinals last night at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. Ditto for UVa players.
The general theme of last night’s post-match reaction was that it’s much better to be playing your best tennis in May than in February.
A look at recent history would seem to support that theory: Virginia had won the previous four ITA titles and where did that get them come NCAA Tournament time? Zero titles.
Maybe losing this year’s ITAs will, in some weird psychological sense if nothing else, help them get over the hump in May.
