The Virginia men’s tennis team features a number of players who, in all likelihood, you’ll be seeing on the ATP Tour very soon.
Personally, I believe the one with the most potential is freshman Alex Domijan—a dude who I’m really anxious to see in person this weekend when No. 1 Virginia hosts Duke and UNC.
The 6-foot-8 Domijan has been compared to current pro player John Isner, but with one difference: Observers say he is much more advanced than Isner was at the same stage. Isner, if you’re wondering, is currently ranked No. 33 on the tour!
I don’t want to be part of any ill-fated hype machine, but, truth to be told, we may have America’s next great tennis player performing right in our backyard.
Yesterday I asked Virginia coach Brian Boland about Domijan, who has yet to lose a match this season in 15 tries at the No. 2 singles spot.
“He’s exceeded our expectations in the way that he has completely embraced the opportunity to be part of the University of Virginia both as a student and an athlete. He’s just done an amazing job representing [the school] on and off the court.
“He’s a very coachable young man, who looks at every day as an opportunity to get better. He not only makes himself batter, but he makes everyone around him better the way he approaches his practices and matches. He’s had a major impact on our team already as a freshman and we just couldn’t be happier with his development and his continued improvement in both as a player and as a person. It’s been a real blessing to have the chance to coach somebody like Alex.
“For our fans who come out this weekend, I think it’s a great opportunity to see him in action. He’s an exciting player to watch. He has a big serve and a big game off the ground. He’s an overpowering figure. He stands at almost 6-foot-8. So it’s an opportunity for our fans to get a real look at Alex against the best competition in the ACC.“
