The Town of Madison
The town of Madison is the county seat and commercial center. It is near the center of the county, near the intersections of the three major highways serving the area—U.S. 29, Route 230 and Route 231. There are 309 residents in the town whose east-west boundaries parallel Main Street.
The town is governed by Mayor Willie Lamar and a four-person town council comprised of Vice Mayor Nancy Knighting, Alma Lu Ayers, Lawrence Beasley and Charles Carter. The town office has moved from the Arcade Building on Main Street to the Peterson Building on Main Street, which also houses the Department of Motor Vehicles office. The town council meets at that office on the first Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. The town planning commission meets when needed.
