RecyclingThe county operates a transfer station and recycling center off Route 662, between Shelby and Rochelle. The center is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The transfer station accepts county residents’ household waste for free with charges levied at $60 per ton (or three cents per pound) for most other types of waste. Residents can dispose of stripped Christmas trees for free.
The station also waives charges for brush in March and October. (The county closed its landfill and opened a trash transfer station at the same site midway through 1999.)
The Environmental Control and Recycling Committee runs a recycling center at the landfill and stations a mobile recycling trailer at strategic locations in the county for those who live in more isolated areas. The trailer is parked for a week at each location—in front of the old Madison General Store on Washington Street, the lot at Route 670 and Route 231 in Banco, and in front of Madison Market (the former IGA store). Check the lower left front page of the current Madison County Eagle to determine which of the three sites it is parked at.
The trailer accepts items like aluminum and steel cans, newspapers and glass. Used appliances and motor oil should not be left at the trailer, which is not designed to accept such items. The county transfer station accepts used appliances for a $5 fee. Shelby Automotive at 5015 S. Seminole Trail (U.S. 29) in Shelby accepts used motor oil during its normal business hours only for a fee of $3 per gallon.
