At the Jan. 11 Fluvanna County School Board meeting, Rivanna District representative Brian Phillips announced that he was stepping down. He resigned his position due to a job that is requiring him to relocate to Hawaii. Though it was his last meeting, he did not turn in an official letter of resignation and will, therefore, still be considered a Board Member until he does so.

Columbia District representative Camilla Washington was appointed the new chair of the school board. William Hughes of the Cunningham District is the new vice-chair. Because Hughes took office during the middle of a term, he will need to run for re-election this coming November if he wishes to keep his position. Board members serve for a term of four years.

Brenda Pace ran unopposed in the last election, becoming the new representative for the Palmyra District. She is a business owner and grandmother who’s had several grandchildren in the Fluvanna County School system. Pace succeeded Tom Muir, whose term ended recently.

At the Feb. 8 school board meeting, members will be asking for recommendations from the public as to what the Grades 3-4 elementary school should be named. Board members are scheduled to take action on the names during the meeting.
