Decks by DeMers Published: April 13, 2011 By Patrick Robbins Serving Fluvanna County and much of the surrounding communities, Decks by DeMers is an all-around dedicated custom home improvement company that works closely with each client from beginning to end. The small, but busy company is owned by Jason DeMers, a man that has been in the construction business for a very long time. His experience with working both with his hands and people shows in the reputation he has garnered since opening his operation in 2004. Jason DeMers is a Fairfield, Calif., native. He moved to Richmond and then his family found their way to Fluvanna, where he attended school and has called our county home since 1992. He began his work in construction at a very young age. “I took trade in high school,” he said as he related the beginnings of his career. Always interested in construction he discovered that he had a “knack” for the trade. As an eager teenager willing to do grunt work, he would ask to come on board on private home construction sites to help clean up and pick up trash that was generated by the crews as they worked. When he graduated, he was able to begin work as a professional in the trade under the tutelage of David Moyer, a local contractor, learning all aspects of construction. After a year with Moyer, he learned how to frame houses and was part of many area crews putting up the skeletons of new homes. At the age of 21, he was working on his own as a house framer. He worked as a framer until about 2004 as many homes were busily being constructed during a very busy real estate market at the time. DeMers wanted to reach new levels in his trade, moving from being a sub-contractor for home builders and strike out on his own as a true independent contractor, creating projects from design to finished product. “I wanted to start doing my own thing,” he said. During 2004 and 2005, he found many projects in the Lake Monticello and surrounding areas that needed his skills for building decks and other forms of home improvement—both exterior and interior. Even as new construction started to fall off after 2005, he still found constant work in the area as many homeowners, unable to sell homes during the bursting of the housing bubble, instead decided to stay in their homes and improve them. DeMers first business DeMers Carpentry, bloomed into what is known today as Decks by DeMers. The small mobile company, whose truck can be seen all over the county, is now a busy player in the local home improvement field, primarily specializing in building decks and porches. When work recently slowed down due to banks not releasing home equity funds to homeowners, DeMers took a hit in his business as 90 percent of his clients usually took out a loan against their home to have improvements done. With banks tightening up on who they lent money to, DeMers was forced to downsize. However, he diversified the work that he did, branching out into other types of home improvement work, which helped keep the young company afloat in a tough market. “It’s worked out well,” says DeMers. He is proud to say that what makes his company stand out amongst the other construction businesses is his customer service. “Customer service is number one,” he exclaims. Wanting to be the best in the business, he relies on doing the best work possible to generate what he feels is the most powerful positive advertising around, word-of-mouth. “I go above and beyond what is expected,” he says. Decks by DeMers operates Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. DeMers can be reached by phone at (888) 840-3860 or (434) 960-9289 or by email at . Decks by DeMers serves Palmyra, Charlottesville, Lake Monticello and all of Central Virginia, even reaching into the Richmond area. (1) Comments • Email This Article |
