Fluvanna Community Singers prepare for Annual Spring Concert

The Fluvanna Community Singers will begin preparing for their annual Spring concert, titled “Shades of the Blues” on Wednesday, Feb. 8. In an interview with Horace Scruggs, the choir’s director, he gives a glimpse of their upcoming concert.

“There’s a saying in the music world that the ‘blues ain’t always sad,’” Scruggs replied when asked what type of music the Spring concert will feature. “The Fluvanna Community Singers are going to try their best to make that a true statement. We’re planning on making the bulk of the concert blues songs.” The song list includes classic blues songs like “St. Louis Blues,” “Basin Street Blues,” and “Alright, Ok, You Win.” Other great songs from the Big Band Era are also included in the concert’s line-up.

The choir is also planning on creating a different atmosphere for the May concert. “I think the attendees of the concert will be pleasantly surprised at the way we are going to present the songs,” Scruggs explains “Without giving too much away, let’s just say it won’t be your normal ‘stand on the riser and sing’ program. It’s going to be a lot more relaxed, we might even tell a few jokes!”

Right now the musical organization is looking for people who would like to join the group—the only requirement is that you must love to sing. The choir rehearses on Wednesday nights at the Palmyra Methodist Church (in historic Court House Square) beginning at 7 p.m. The Spring concerts are slated for Saturday, May 5 at 7:30 p.m. and a 3 p.m. concert is planned for Sunday, May 6. Both concerts will be held at the Carybrook Performing Arts Center.
