Is Scottsville Losing its Chamber of Commerce? Published: February 16, 2011 In a letter written to members of Scottsville’s Community Chamber of Commerce (SCCC), President Brian LaFontaine warns of its impending closure if no Scottsville business owner is able to replace him at the end of his term. “Efforts to solicit replacement leadership has failed,” Fontaine says in the letter that recognizes the 40-plus-year history of the SCCC and its value in providing services to the town’s businesses. “However, a lack of member participation, low funds in our treasury, and no apparent successor to the office of president leaves little alternative than to disband the organization.” The SCCC oversees the community Farmer’s Market and annually provides a directory of business and residential listings that are sent to everyone within Scottsville’s zip code, 24590. “These benefits will cease to exist without membership support and the leadership necessary to maintain the Scottsville Community Chamber of Commerce,” writes LaFontaine. A last-chance effort for someone to volunteer to run the organization was to take place Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Scottsville Presbyterian Church on Bird Street where general membership meetings are held. “If, like most of our general membership meetings, there are only a few (less than 10) who show interest by attending then the disbandment of the SCCC is determined. Thus, no more Farmer’s Market, no more Scottsville Directory and no more venue for community businesses to work to improve commerce and quality of life in the Scottsville community.” (0) Comments • Email This Article |
