Photo by Heather Harris Published: January 18, 2012 By Heather Harris If you walk past the front window of the Chroma Projects Art Laboratory, the larger-than-life-painting on display is likely to stop you in your tracks. With just a glance, the artwork immediately draws one in, transporting them to an ethereal forest. The light and shadows dance off glimmering vines and leaves, almost beckoning the observer to step inside the canvas and wander about. The painting is part of the newest collection created by Scottsville artist Michelle Gagliano. Born in western New York, she began her artistic studies in Texas under the guidance of Vernon Fisher. She obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Plymouth State University in New Hampshire. Professionally, Gagliano has been painting for about 25 years. She made her debut to the art world at a gallery in Santa Fe. “My start with the galleries was with Martha Keats. It’s just a great, great gallery,” Gagliano said. Since then, her work has been put on display across the county. Galleries in New Orleans, Houston, and New York, as well as the Page Bond Gallery in Richmond, have all exhibited the artist’s work. “Art is about process,” Gagliano said. Her approach to the craft is unique and imaginative. She puts a tremendous amount of time into constructing each component of her paintings. Backgrounds alone can take up to five months, as she prefers to blend multiple colors together to create one color. The shimmering glow of her artwork is created using an old recipe for glaze. “I just love painting. It’s a love for the medium,” she said. Gagliano finds inspiration in the nature around her. One of her pieces was influenced by a grove of dead trees near Monticello High School. She enjoys the scenic back roads and will often pull over when a landscape sparks her creativity. Her studio is located at the Chroma Gallery, which she calls “a gem.” Here, she has plenty of space to tackle her larger projects and is able to socialize with fellow artists. Soon, she will begin work on a collection inspired by Dante’s “Divine Comedy.” “I feel very fortunate,” Gagliano said.
