Outside, performers in military garb carry prop guns under their arms. It’s called the “Blood Barn” and it’s where actors from C-ville Performing Arts prepare for another evening of thrills and chills at the Haunted Trail Walk, just off Route 6 in Scottsville. The yearly event, which started in 2009, is hosted by C-ville Performing Arts Owners Amy and T. Eric Hart. Amy, a former resident of Detroit, used to host Halloween-themed balls while she was living in the Motor City. Planning for this year’s event, titled “Outbreak,” began back in June. The Louisa County earthquake partly inspired the theme. The storyline behind the theme is that the earthquake released an infectious disease from underneath the ground. Victims have fled into the woods to hide from the military which is trying to track them down. Guests of the Halloween Trail Walk take on the role of reporters and journalists. For $10 per ticket, guests are issued press badges and are sent through a makeshift decontamination tent. After being screened for infection, they make their way through a dark wooded trail while dodging infected victims and the occasional charging soldier. The entire walk takes about 15-20 minutes. Guests can purchase a beverage, candy bar, or souvenir shirt from the “Beastro,” a snack table operated by Donna Betz, a resident of Falls Church and Amy Hart’s mother. Some of the proceeds from ticket sales benefit three local high schools: Buckingham, Monticello and Fluvanna. Each Saturday night in October is geared toward a different school. If a guest shows up with a school identification card, sports jersey, or any other item with a logo for that particular school, $3 from the ticket sale will be donated the school. The Haunted Trail Walk’s debut had a zombie theme and attracted about 800 guests. That number nearly quadrupled in 2010 when it drew in over 3,000 guests with a Wild West theme. Carey Frost, one of the actors, estimates there will be more than 3,000 guests again this year. When asked about next year’s theme, Frost responded, “We’re going to eat dinner and brainstorm.” Oct. 28-31 are the last days for the Haunted Trail Walk this season. A portion of ticket sales on Oct. 29 will be donated to Fluvanna County High School. Local community theaters will benefit from ticket sales on Oct. 30.
