Walmart Employees Help End Hunger Photo by Matt Campbell Published: December 28, 2011 Submitted by Lisa Himes More than 90 Walmart Distribution Center employees and managers helped to purchase, pack and deliver 102 emergency food bags along with fruit baskets for senior adults in Fluvanna County. Fluvanna Meals on Wheels provides emergency food bags for their clients in case of inclement weather and for holidays when meals are not delivered. The 102 bags provided enough food for more than two weeks of meals for every client. A food bin was placed in the warehouse where employees donated the food items and then later used the warehouse to pack the bags and prepare them for delivery. This undertaking accumulated more than 250 volunteer hours from the Walmart employees, which will be enough hours for Fluvanna Meals on Wheels to receive a $5,000 grant from Walmart Foundation. Tony Fernandez, Distribution Center Manager, helped to coordinate these efforts along with Meals on Wheels volunteer, board member and Walmart employee, Matt Campbell. Walmart has a grant program called “Volunteerism Always Pays” where the management encourages their employees and managers to donate their time to different charities and to be active in their community. “Walmart employees have become an important part of our organization and it is refreshing to see a large corporation encouraging employees to volunteer,” said Lisa Himes, volunteer coordinator with Fluvanna Meals on Wheels. “We are an all-volunteer organization and rely on the community members to help us complete our mission to see that no senior goes hungry in Fluvanna County.” (8) Comments • Email This Article |
