Winning Woodsy Owl Poster Justine Rodriguez holds her winning Woodsy Owl poster that will be forwarded to the state competition. Courtesy photo Published: October 26, 2011 Five Fluvanna County second-grade classrooms recently participated in the national annual Smokey Bear/ Woodsy Owl poster contest sponsored by the United States Department of Forestry. The purpose of this contest is to raise awareness of Smokey’s message—“Only You Can Prevent Wildfires”—and Woodsy’s message—“Lend a Hand Care for the Land.” Barbara Perrotti, Fluvanna Garden Club chairman, began each presentation with a reading of “The True Story of Smokey the Bear,” which teaches the importance of fire safety and prevention. Next she shared the book “Human Footprint” which illustrates the necessity of recycling. Students had two weeks to design and draw their posters. Art Teacher Debbie Goldie worked with Cunningham students and Librarian Nancy King worked with Columbia students. Goldie and King, along with Perrotti, judged the posters. First and second place winners were chosen from each school and those four students received books along with Woodsy bookmarks. The first place poster from Cunningham Elementary School was drawn by Justine Rodriguez from Ms. Gooch’s class; second place poster was drawn by David Taylor from Ms Peck’s class. Winning posters from Columbia Elementary School were: first place, drawn by Alexis Wills, and second place, drawn by Joseph Sam—both students are in Ms Nuckles’ class. The poster selected as the overall winner was Justine Rodriguez’s Woodsy Owl. This poster will be forwarded to the Virginia Department of Forestry and entered into statewide competition.
