You ever see the gag gift: “For the man that has everything, a diamond studded belly button brush?” Well, the man that received that gift definitely was not a fisherman because when it comes to fishing equipment, having everything is impossible. So many new items are coming on the market every day that even the most hardcore shopaholic can’t keep up. Here is but a few examples.

The Humminbird RF35e SmartCast Wristband Fishfinder. This product is a fully functional fishfinder with a backlit display for night fishing and a water surface temperature reading. It’s even a chronograph! (For those of you who are not familiar with military vernacular, that means watch.) It’s all packaged in a wrist-mounted case that’s about the size of one of those old timey LED watches with a button you pushed to get the red numbers to light up.

Actually that’s not entirely true. It’s not like you hold out your arm over the side of the boat and transmit sonar signals through your wrist into the water. There’s a second component to the system, the transducer. This part is about the size of a plum, floats on the surface, and is intended to be cast out with a fishing rod or even used in line as you would a bobber. The transducer communicates with the display unit wirelessly. As a matter of fact the RF35e is only one of several SmartCast fishfinders available from Humminbird. There’s also the RF15e which mounts on the console like a normal fishfinder, the RF25e which mounts on your fishing rod and the deluxe model PiranhaMax 230e which employs dual beam sonar so the fish have absolutely nowhere to hide. The RF35e lists for $79.99 at Cabela’s.

When it comes to reels there’s always a new and improved version coming out. The latest and greatest in the eyes of many folks is the Abu Garcia Revo MGX. It won the Best Freshwater Reel Award at the 2011 ICAST show in Las Vegas. The reel features nine stainless steel ball bearings, a roller bearing and a titanium coated line guide. Carbon side plates and aluminum frame make for an overall weight of just 5.4 ounces. The Infinitely Variable Centrifugal Brake system allows the angler to easily cast a wide variety of bait sizes including extremely light lures. Line capacity is 115 yards of 12 pound test mono and the main gears are aluminum so it’s not suited for heavy duty applications. Anglers should stick with Abu Garcia’s Ambassadeur series for drag smoking gamefish like blue catfish and striped bass. With an extremely oversized handle that is intended to relieve stress on the wrist, it reminds me of a fiddler crab. Bass Pro Shops lists this reel at $349.99.

For those of us with shallower pockets here’s an ideal gift idea, the Berkley Classics Mini Line Spooler. It’s a rather simple gadget that mounts to the fishing rod in front of the first line guide. You mount your spool of line on it, thread it through the first guide and tie it to your empty reel spool. You wind the new line onto the reel just like you’re reeling in a lure. It works with both reel fill and quarter-pound spools of line. It’s important to remember when filling a reel in this fashion the line should play off the top of the spool so as to avoid reversing the curl in the line and keep some tension on the line by pinching it between your fingers with the hand that’s not winding the handle. An ideal companion gift to the Berkley Mini Line Spooler is the Berkley Line Stripper. After all, you have to remove the old line before installing the new. The stripper pulls your old line off the reel in minutes; it’s powered by two AA batteries and also has a hook sharpener. The Line Spooler retails for $4.99 and the Line Stripper runs $9.39.
